Maarten Haverkamp acquired a French book from 1498 titled The Prophecies of Merlin that claimed to be prophecies given by the legendary magician. The book was really a compilation of documents collected by an unknown 13th century monk. Working with John Matthews, Maarten spent five years translating the mysteries hidden in this obscure book.

Presenting their translation and commentary, the authors share forgotten stories of early Arthurian literature and magic. They share the tale of Merlin’s birth from a demon, how he was born able to speak, and how his magic ensured he was not killed by his guardian. Merlin’s affair with the Lady of the Lake is detailed, ending with his imprisonment in a tomb. Other stories include Percival’s first contact with the Grail and King Arthur’s connection with the mystical king Prester John. The authors show how The Prophecies of Merlin sheds new light on the world of King Arthur and the women who learned magic from Merlin.

To reveal the esoteric meaning of this work, the authors include Welsh prophecies attributed to Merlin (translated by John and Caitlín Matthews), other prophecies attributed to Merlin that were compiled by Geoffrey of Monmouth, and the original letter of Prester John that inspired the Polo family and Columbus to search for India.

Discovering a hitherto lost or forgotten book about Merlin and King Arthur is a rare event these days. Yet here the authors present a virtually forgotten and, to date, untranslated book, which includes much that is new—and exciting—about the legendary king and his magical adviser. Through their translation and insightful passage by passage commentary, they reveal secrets long hidden behind the obscure language of the prophetic utterances.

Over the past century, Ben Jonson’s First Folio reference to Shakespeare’s “small Latin and lesse Greek” has led literary scholars to conclude that Shakespeare used English or Latin translations of Seneca, Plutarch, and Ovid as sources for his dramatic adaptations from Greek myth. The untranslated dramas of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, and Aristophanes were rarely considered to be primary sources.

Shakespeare’s Greater Greek sets forth the extensive literary and historical evidence demonstrating the profound influence of these previously excluded Greek dramas on Shakespeare’s comedies and tragedies, with fresh analyses of: Hamlet, Macbeth, Timon of Athens, Titus Andronicus, The Winter’s Tale, Pericles, Prince of Tyre, Much Ado About Nothing, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

The playwright’s knowledge of untranslated Greek sources directly challenges the claim of authorship made on behalf of the gentleman from Stratford, and supports the attribution of these works to Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, who studied the Greek Bible, attended the Greek church in Venice, and collected and sponsored translations of classical Greek editions. The recent discovery of de Vere’s annotations in both both Latin and Greek handwriting in Greek editions of Roman history at the Audley End Library in Essex, England provides clear proof of Oxford’s Greek fluency and his potential involvement in the creation of the Shakespeare canon.

Recognizing Greek drama, history, and epic as Shakespeare sources has profound implications, not only as newly acknowledged literary sources, but also reflecting critically in support of an author deeply indebted to the Greek example.

The Ohio Valleys Antiquarians and what they discovered with Mark Eddy

The Grave Creek Mound is a well known remnant of West Virginia' Native American prehistory. However, for most people interested in prehistory,they may not realize that fossil specimens from the Northern Panhandle and Upper Ohio River Valley laid the foundation for the study of America's Deep Antiquity. Many of the 19th Century scientists were employed by the emerging fossil fuel industries when they made their discoveries of the Permian animals and plants. While the Valley's geology kept the scientists returning, they made other discoveries related to the Ice Age. For example, they arrived at the conclusion that the Ohio River had been an evolving geographical feature. It was covered by an ocean, was a swamp, then a series of independent lakes, then a massive lake until a mysterious, catastrophic event caused a sudden drainage, which created the "unified" river we know today.
As we move forward in time, we find that the Upper Ohio Valley has been forgotten about, mischaracterized, and we do not have a solid understanding of the Valley's Native inhabitants. Modern researchers write about what was found in each state bordering the Ohio River at the expense of a more holistic view of both shores of the river. Did the Ancients observe such a boundary? The second half of the book examines what we do not know about the Valley's prehistoric cultures and what we will try to answer over this series.
Mr. Eddy includes many photographs of Permian and Pleistocene specimens, curated artifacts and panoramas of where the scientists developed their theories of the evolution of the Ohio Valley.
